Mitja Kobal is a Slovenian photographer based in Vienna, working across architecture, industry, portraiture, and documentary. His clients include Greenpeace, Accor, Austrian Post, 3MPG, CC Real, and the Slovenian Tourist Board.
His independent work follows subjects in transformation; retreating glaciers, traditional Japanese craftsmanship, landscapes seen through infrared light. Climate Impact, commissioned by Greenpeace Austria, documents the visible consequences of climate change across the country. Way of the Blade, a documentary on Japanese bladesmiths whose sword-making lineage evolved into knife-making after the katana was outlawed, was published as an eight-page feature in Stern. Dreams of Reality, a long-term infrared series shot in Japan, won 1st Place at the Kolari Vision Life in Another Light international competition.
His photograph of the Schlatenkees glacier in East Tyrol — documented across three return visits as the glacier collapsed into a lake — was awarded 2nd Place for Photograph of the Year at the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards.
